As a SHARP graduate (including our Construction and Wastewater Collection & Treatment operations), the benefits from this process have been immense. In a nutshell, the SHARP program moved us from a compliance-based, rules orientated program to a meaningful employee involvement safety culture. Our occupational injuries/illness rates have been significantly reduced and the relationships with other Oregon SHARP & VPP employers has grown. Through the Oregon SHARP Alliance, we have been able to share and receive valuable and useful material and insight for continuous improvement. The support from Oregon OSHA has been greatly appreciated.

Thanks Oregon SHARP Alliance! Thanks for all you do to bring knowledge, experience, and networking to those of us choosing to build mature and sustainable safety programs. I see so many companies that do not have a safety professional on staff sending personnel to SHARP Alliance quarterly training meetings to learn from experts and each other. I see safety professionals from many companies attending in order to hone their skills and to network with each other. As we all know, safety professionals depend on each other for personal development and growth of various safety elements in our companies. Sharing knowledge and tools is so important to our success.
Having access to people who are ready to share their SHARP journey with companies who are considering SHARP is very a helpful and valuable tool as well. If it weren’t for such people, seeing the value of the SHARP program may be obscure or even overwhelming. I have learned, gained friends, and become more valuable to my employer because of being involved in the Oregon SHARP Alliance. While this sounds selfish, one truly admirable part of the SHARP Alliance is that I know I can call on a host of professionals for thoughts and advice on nearly any safety subject that is important to me. Covanta Marion took a big step to improve their safety program 2005 by joining the Oregon SHARP Alliance. Using the tools the Alliance provides, the Marion employees improved their programs and graduated from SHARP in 2007.
The program was so successful the facility employees took it to the next step and started working toward the VPP Star rating which was achieved in 2008 and successfully recertified in 2014. Covanta Marion’s core safety values align with the Oregon SHARP Alliance and we continue our relationship and Membership with the Alliance.
The employees at Covanta have learned a lot about going beyond the minimum standards set by OSHA. The Employees at Covanta focus on safety as a core value, continually looking for potential hazards and making improvements to keep our employees safe.
The Oregon SHARP Alliance and Oregon VPP programs are a key components making Covanta Marion’s Safety program successful.
